Battle of the Gulf of Riga

Significance

The Battle of the Gulf of Riga was a German naval operation aimed at clearing Russian forces from the Gulf of Riga in order to support an army landing and hasten the capture of Riga during the Central Powers' 1915 Eastern Front offensive. The German fleet, under Franz von Hipper, failed to destroy the Russian Baltic Fleet under Vasily Kanin and was compelled to withdraw. The operation's failure left Riga in Russian hands, frustrating the broader German strategic plan to consolidate control over the Eastern Baltic littoral. Riga did not fall until 1 September 1917, meaning the German naval setback contributed to a two-year delay in achieving that objective on the Eastern Front.
