Battle of Bitlis

Significance

The Battle of Bitlis was a series of engagements in the summer of 1916 contested between Russian Imperial forces and Ottoman forces for control of the town of Bitlis and the nearby town of Muş. Bitlis held particular strategic weight as the last Ottoman stronghold blocking Russian entry into Anatolia and Mesopotamia. Control of the town therefore represented a potential gateway for Russian forces to push deeper into Ottoman territory, making its defense a critical priority for Ottoman commanders including Mustafa Kemal Pasha and Ahmed Izzet Pasha. The engagement resulted in recorded Ottoman casualties of 34,000, reflecting the intensity of the fighting. The Russian effort was led by Nikolai Yudenich and Armenian commander Andranik Ozanian, situating the battle within the broader Russian Caucasus campaign of the war.
