Battle context

The Battle of the Gebora, fought northwest of Badajoz on 19 February 1811, resulted in the near-destruction of the Spanish Army of Extremadura. A French force of roughly 7,000, under Soult and Mortier, routed a Spanish army of approximately 12,000 under Mendizábal, inflicting around 1,000 casualties and eliminating a significant Allied field force in the Extremadura theater. The outcome stripped the Badajoz garrison of its principal external support at a critical moment in the Peninsular War, tightening French control over the region and undermining Allied efforts to defend the Portuguese frontier. The engagement demonstrated the persistent vulnerability of Spanish regular forces when engaged by experienced French commanders, and its consequences compounded pressure on Wellington's strategic position as the contest over the key fortress of Badajoz intensified.
