Battle context
The Battle of the Bogue was fought in the Pearl River Delta, Guangdong province, between British and Chinese forces. British operations at the Humen strait targeted the forts on the islands of Anunghoy and North Wangtong, and their capture opened the Pearl River to further British naval advance. With the strait secured, the fleet was able to proceed upriver toward Canton, which fell the following month. Control of this chokepoint thus directly enabled the broader campaign into the Pearl River interior.
