Battle of Temalaca

Overview

The Battle of Temalaca took place during the War of Mexican Independence on 5 November 1815 in the area around Temalaca, Puebla. The battle was fought between the royalist forces loyal to the Spanish crown and the Mexican rebels fighting for independence from the Spanish Empire. The Mexican insurgents were commanded by José María Morelos and the Spanish by Manuel de la Concha. The battle resulted in a victory for the Spanish Royalists.

Significance

The Battle of Temalaca, fought on 5 November 1815 near Temalaca, Puebla, ended in a royalist victory over the Mexican insurgent forces commanded by José María Morelos y Pavón. Morelos was one of the foremost military and political leaders of the independence movement, and his defeat and subsequent capture at Temalaca represented a severe blow to the rebel cause. The engagement effectively removed the most prominent organizing figure of the insurgency from the field, disrupting the coordination and momentum that the independence movement had built. Spanish forces under Manuel de la Concha secured a result that would have lasting consequences for the trajectory of the war well beyond a single engagement.
