Battle of Tashihchiao

Overview

The Battle of Tashihchiao was a land engagement fought on 24–25 July 1904, during the Imperial Japanese Army's advance toward Liaoyang in first stage of the Russo-Japanese War. Tashihchiao is located about 25 kilometres (16 mi) southwest of the city of Haicheng, in present-day Liaoning Province, China. The town of Tashihchiao was of strategic importance in the Russo-Japanese War, as it was a railroad junction between the main line on the Russian South Manchurian Railway and a spur which led to the old treaty port of Yingkou (Newchwang). Control of both was essential for further advances by Japanese forces towards Liaoyang and Mukden.

Significance

The Battle of Tashihchiao was fought on 24–25 July 1904 as part of the Imperial Japanese Army's advance toward Liaoyang during the first stage of the Russo-Japanese War. The town held strategic value as a railroad junction on the Russian South Manchurian Railway, where the main line connected to a spur leading to the treaty port of Yingkou (Newchwang). Control of this junction was considered essential for any continued Japanese push toward Liaoyang and Mukden. Securing or contesting Tashihchiao therefore bore directly on the logistical and operational momentum of the broader Manchurian campaign, as the railway network determined the pace and sustainability of advances by both sides. The engagement involved roughly equal forces under Oku Yasukata on the Japanese side and Georg von Stackelberg and Nikolai Zarubaev commanding Russian forces, with each side sustaining approximately 1,000 casualties.
