Significance

The Battle of Tarutino was fought during Napoleon's occupation of Moscow, when Russian forces under Bennigsen's immediate command launched a surprise attack on Murat's detachment, outnumbering it heavily and inflicting greater casualties than they suffered. Despite this local success, the battle fell short of its potential: Kutuzov declined to extend the offensive, fearing a direct engagement with Napoleon, and Bennigsen chose not to pursue Murat with available forces. The Russian infantry, filled with new recruits, performed poorly, and night delays further limited exploitation of the surprise. The engagement fractured the relationship between Kutuzov and Bennigsen, costing the latter his influence in the army for a period.
