Battle context

The Battle of Tampere, fought between Finnish White and Red forces, stands as the most significant and costly engagement of the Finnish Civil War. The White forces, numbering around 16,000, confronted approximately 14,000 Red defenders in a prolonged urban contest. The Red side suffered 2,000 casualties during the fighting itself. The aftermath proved equally consequential: White forces executed hundreds of captured Reds, and approximately 11,000 prisoners were sent to the Kalevankangas camp. The battle's scale and its brutal conclusion made it the defining episode of the Finnish Civil War, demonstrating both the intensity of the internal conflict and the willingness of the victorious Whites to suppress their opponents through lethal force following battlefield success.
