Battle of Sumy

Overview

On 24 February 2022, the first day of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, a military engagement took place in the city of Sumy, located near the Russia–Ukraine border. Ukrainian paratroopers and territorial defense forces began engaging Russian forces within the city, resulting in heavy urban fighting and the destruction of a Russian tank column. That evening, Ukraine's paratroopers were ordered to withdraw from the city, leaving the city's defense to a few thousand local volunteers armed with rifles, limited anti-tank weapons and no armed vehicles or heavy weaponry. After three to four days of failing to enter the city, the Russian military shifted to encircle and bypass the city, and were then subject to guerrilla ambushes.

Significance

The Battle of Sumy opened on the first day of the Russian invasion, February 24, 2022, making it one of the earliest urban engagements of the full-scale war. Ukrainian paratroopers and territorial defense forces destroyed a Russian tank column within the city, inflicting an estimated 200 Russian casualties against a Ukrainian force of roughly 117. When Ukrainian paratroopers were ordered to withdraw that evening, the city's defense fell to several thousand local volunteers equipped only with rifles and limited anti-tank weapons. Russia failed to enter the city over the following three to four days, then shifted to encirclement and bypass tactics, only to face continued guerrilla ambushes. The engagement demonstrated early that lightly armed urban defenders and territorial volunteers could impose significant costs on mechanized Russian columns, and Sumy's resistance tied down Russian forces in the northeastern axis during the critical opening phase of the invasion.
