Significance

The Battle of Sultanabad on 13 February 1812 resulted in a Russian force being surrounded and routed by Persian forces under Abbas Mirza, marking one of the more consequential Persian tactical successes of the Russo-Persian War of 1804–13. Russian casualties numbered between 300 and 343. The engagement demonstrated that Persian forces, led by Abbas Mirza, were capable of encircling and defeating Russian units in the field, a significant check on Russian military operations in the region during the later phase of the war.
