Overview

The Battle of Aslanduz took place on 31 October and 1 November 1812 between the Russian Empire and Qajar Iran during the Russo-Persian War (1804-1813). Russian Imperial army, smaller in number, defeated the Persian troops and captured the spoils.

Significance

The Battle of Aslanduz was a decisive Russian victory during the Russo-Persian War of 1804–13, in which a Russian force of roughly 2,000 under Pyotr Kotlyarevsky defeated a Qajar Iranian army of around 5,000 commanded by Abbas Mirza and Dowlatshah. Qajar casualties equaled their entire engaged force, a scale of loss that critically weakened Persian military capacity in the closing phase of the war. The battle accelerated the collapse of Iranian resistance and contributed to the conditions that produced the Treaty of Gulistan in 1813, by which Qajar Iran ceded significant territory in the Caucasus to Russia.
