Battle of Smoliani

Overview

At the Battle of Smoliani or Smolyany, the Russians under General Peter Wittgenstein defeated the French forces of Marshal Claude Victor and Marshal Nicholas Oudinot. This battle was the last effort of the French to reestablish their northern flank in Russia, known as the "Dvina Line". Previously, the French had been defeated in this sector at the Second Battle of Polotsk and at the Battle of Czasniki. The site of the battle in today's Bol'shiye Smol'yantsy should not be confused with Smalyany.

Significance

The Battle of Smoliani was the final French attempt to reestablish their northern flank in Russia, the so-called Dvina Line. Wittgenstein's Russian force of 30,000 defeated the combined French corps under Marshals Victor and Oudinot, numbering 25,000, at a cost of roughly 3,000 casualties on each side. The defeat sealed the failure of French operations in this sector, which had already been compromised at the Second Battle of Polotsk and at the Battle of Czasniki. With Smoliani, the Dvina Line collapsed permanently, leaving the northern flank of the Grande Armée's retreat exposed and further eroding French strategic options during the withdrawal from Russia in 1812.
