Battle of Silkaatsnek

Significance

The Battle of Silkaatsnek, fought at the mountain pass between Pretoria and Rustenburg on July 11, 1900, marked an early demonstration of the Boer shift toward guerrilla warfare in the Second Boer War. Rather than engaging British forces in a set-piece battle, Koos de la Rey's forces used surprise to reverse the British position at the pass. The engagement was not an isolated incident: on the same day British forces suffered two further reversals at Dwarsvlei in the Krugersdorp district and at Onderstepoort, suggesting a coordinated or at minimum concurrent Boer operational pressure across multiple points. The British stabilized within days, withstanding a Boer attack at Witpoort east of Pretoria on July 16. Taken together, these engagements reflect the transitional moment in the war when Boer commanders like De la Rey adapted tactics following the fall of Pretoria, moving away from conventional defense toward the guerrilla campaign that would define the conflict's final phase.
