Battle of Shanghai

Significance

The Battle of Shanghai, fought from August 13 to November 26, 1937, was arguably the single largest and longest battle of the entire Second Sino-Japanese War. China committed roughly 700,000 troops against a Japanese force of approximately 300,000, yet the engagement ended with the Japanese capture of Shanghai and heavy destruction to the city. The scale and duration of the fighting have led some historians to characterize it as the first battle of World War II, underscoring its place not only within the Sino-Japanese conflict but within the broader arc of mid-twentieth-century warfare. The fall of Shanghai opened the way for further Japanese advances into Chinese territory and demonstrated the limits of Chinese defensive capacity against a heavily armed Japanese expeditionary force, setting the operational conditions for subsequent campaigns deeper into China.
