The Battle of Shanggao, designated Operation Kinkō by the Japanese, was one of 22 major engagements between the National Revolutionary Army and the Imperial Japanese Army during the Second Sino-Japanese War. The engagement involved a Chinese force of nearly 95,000 under Luo Zhuoying against a Japanese force of 65,000 under Korechika Anami. Chinese casualties of approximately 17,700 exceeded Japanese losses of around 5,500, reflecting the attritional pattern common to the wider conflict in which the National Revolutionary Army sustained disproportionate losses while continuing to contest Japanese operational advances in China.
