Significance
The Battle of Seminara was fought in Calabria in the context of the broader Franco-Spanish-Neapolitan struggle over southern Italy during the First Italian War. A French garrison holding recently conquered territory in the south met the combined forces of Spain and Naples, who were attempting to reverse French gains in the region. The allied force, composed of Neapolitan troops described as of indifferent quality and a small contingent of Spanish soldiers experienced in irregular warfare against the Moors rather than pitched European battle, proved unable to contend with the French combination of heavy cavalry gendarmes and Swiss mercenary pikemen. The result was a rout, demonstrating the continued battlefield dominance of the French tactical system in the Italian theater at this stage of the war and exposing the limits of the allied reconquest effort in Calabria.
Tactics
The French force relied on a combination of gendarmes and Swiss mercenary pikemen, which proved decisive against the allied formation. The allied Spanish and Neapolitan troops, outmatched in the main engagement, fell back in disorder, and much of the subsequent fighting consisted of delaying actions conducted to cover the retreat and allow the fleeing allied force to escape.
