Overview
The Battle of Fornovo took place 30 km southwest of the city of Parma on 6 July 1495. It was fought as King Charles VIII of France left Naples upon hearing the news of the grand coalition assembled against him. Despite the numerical advantage of their opponents, the French won the engagement and Charles was able to march his army out of Italy. It was nonetheless devoid of any strategic result as all of their conquests in the Italian Peninsula were abandoned. Fornovo was the first major pitched battle of the Italian Wars.

Significance
The Battle of Fornovo, fought 30 km southwest of Parma on 6 July 1495, was the first major pitched battle of the Italian Wars. It arose directly from the formation of a grand coalition against Charles VIII as he attempted to withdraw his French army from Naples back through the Italian Peninsula. Though France prevailed against a League of Venice force roughly twice its size — inflicting casualties of 3,350–4,000 against French losses of around 1,000 — the victory carried no strategic weight. Charles secured his army's passage out of Italy but abandoned all French conquests on the peninsula in doing so. The battle thus decided the immediate military question of whether the French could extract their force, while leaving the broader contest over Italian territory unresolved. As the opening large-scale engagement of the Italian Wars, Fornovo marked the beginning of a prolonged cycle of foreign intervention and coalition warfare that would define the conflict through subsequent decades.
