Battle of Segesvár

Battle context

The Battle of Segesvár pitted a Hungarian revolutionary force of roughly 3,300 troops under Lieutenant General Józef Bem against a Russian V Corps more than three times its size under General Alexander von Lüders. The Russian army prevailed, inflicting approximately 1,200 casualties on the Hungarian side. Despite the scale of the defeat, it did not end Hungarian resistance in Transylvania: Bem continued operations in the province for another week until the Battle of Nagycsűr on 6 August 1849. The battle carries additional historical weight as the presumed death site of the poet and national hero Sándor Petőfi, whose body was never recovered. On the Russian side, the Chief of Staff of V Corps, General Grigory Skariatin, was killed in the fighting.
