Battle of Schwechat

Overview

The Battle of Schwechat was a battle in the Hungarian war of Independence of 1848-1849, fought on 30 October 1848 between the revolutionary Hungarian Army led by Lieutenant General János Móga against the army of the Austrian Empire led by Alfred I, Prince of Windisch-Grätz and Lieutenant General Josip Jelačić, at Schwechat, near Vienna. This was the last battle of 1848 in the Transdanubian campaign. The Hungarian Army wanted to relieve the revolutionaries from Vienna, besieged by the Austrian imperial army, but they were defeated. Vienna fell on the next day.

Significance

The Battle of Schwechat was the final engagement of the 1848 Transdanubian campaign and marked the end of Hungarian efforts to intervene in the revolutionary crisis at Vienna. The Hungarian Army, numbering roughly 27,655 troops under Lieutenant General János Móga, crossed toward Schwechat with the objective of breaking the Austrian imperial siege of Vienna. Facing a larger Austrian force of some 33,000 men under Alfred I, Prince of Windisch-Grätz and Lieutenant General Josip Jelačić, the Hungarian Army was defeated. Vienna fell the following day, sealing the failure of the relief operation. The defeat foreclosed any immediate coordination between the Hungarian revolutionary movement and the Viennese uprising, leaving Hungary to continue its war of independence without that potential allied front and setting the stage for the intensified imperial campaign that would dominate the conflict into 1849.
