Battle of Pákozd

Significance

The Battle of Pákozd, fought on 29 September 1848 in the Pákozd–Sukoró–Pátka triangle, was the first major engagement of the Hungarian War of Independence of 1848–1849 and one of the most consequential. A Hungarian revolutionary force of roughly 10,400 under Lieutenant-General János Móga halted the advance of Croatian Ban Josip Jelačić, whose force of over 36,000 was marching on Pest in accordance with Habsburg plans to occupy the city and dissolve the Hungarian national government. The battle's immediate strategic result was an armistice concluded by Jelačić, followed by his retreat toward Vienna, effectively ending the first Habsburg military attempt to reassert full control over autonomous Hungary. By repulsing this offensive, the Hungarian revolutionary government gained time and legitimacy at a critical early stage of the war. The battle's place in Hungarian memory was further cemented between 1951 and 1991, when its anniversary served as the official day of the Hungarian Army.
