At Schliengen in October 1796, the French Army of the Rhine and Moselle under Moreau engaged an Austrian force under Archduke Charles near the borders of present-day Baden-Württemberg, Alsace, and Switzerland. Both sides claimed victory, reflecting the inconclusive nature of the engagement. The French force of approximately 32,000 suffered around 1,200 casualties against an Austrian army of roughly 24,000.
