Battle of Sarandí

The Battle of Sarandí was fought on 12 October 1825, in the vicinity of the Arroyo Sarandí in Uruguay, between troops of the Banda Oriental and the Empire of Brazil. It resulted in a decisive victory for the Orientals.

Significance

The Battle of Sarandí delivered a decisive victory for the Banda Oriental forces under Juan Antonio Lavalleja over the Empire of Brazil's troops commanded by Bento Manuel Ribeiro. Fought in October 1825 near the Arroyo Sarandí in what is now Uruguay, the engagement demonstrated that Banda Oriental forces, fielding a larger force, could defeat a Brazilian army in open battle. Brazilian casualties ranged between 158 and 575, indicating the severity of the defeat. The outcome strengthened the Orientalist cause during the Cisplatine War, in which the Banda Oriental sought to break free from Brazilian control, and underscored the military viability of the independence movement that would ultimately contribute to the emergence of Uruguay as a separate state.
