Battle of Camacuã

Significance

The Battle of Camacuã was a follow-on engagement in the Cisplatine War fought roughly two months after the United Provinces' victory at Ituzaingó. Despite logistical difficulties that had forced the Argentine army to withdraw into its own territory and rest its depleted horses, the force regrouped, returned by mid-April, and retook Bagé before pressing the Brazilian army under Sebastião Barreto into retreat at Camacuã. The engagement demonstrated that the United Provinces retained the operational initiative in the contested Banda Oriental even after a temporary withdrawal, and that the Brazilian force of roughly 1,600 could not hold its positions against the returning Argentine column of some 3,000. The outcome extended United Provinces pressure on Brazilian forces in the region, compounding the strategic difficulties Brazil faced following Ituzaingó.
