Battle context

The Battle of Sankt Michael on 25 May 1809 resulted in a French corps under Paul Grenier crushing Franz Jellacic's Austrian division, inflicting 6,573 casualties on a force of roughly 8,000 men — a loss rate that effectively destroyed the Austrian division as a fighting formation. The action took place in Obersteiermark, approximately 140 kilometres southwest of Vienna, following the initial French victories of the War of the Fifth Coalition. By eliminating this Austrian force in the southern theater, the battle extended French operational control deeper into Austria and removed a division that might otherwise have reinforced or screened other Austrian formations during the broader campaign.
