Battle of San Germano

The Battle of San Germano was the final battle in the Neapolitan War between an Austrian force commanded by Laval Nugent von Westmeath and the King of Naples, Joachim Murat. The battle started on 15 May 1815 and ended on 17 May, after the remaining Neapolitan force was routed at Mignano.

Significance

The Battle of San Germano was the concluding engagement of the Neapolitan War, pitting an Austrian force of 8,000 under Laval Nugent von Westmeath against Joachim Murat's Neapolitan army of 15,000. Despite holding a substantial numerical advantage, Murat's forces suffered approximately 3,500 casualties and were ultimately routed at Mignano by 17 May 1815. The defeat effectively ended Murat's attempt to retain his kingdom, collapsing Neapolitan resistance and securing Austrian dominance over the Italian peninsula in the immediate post-Napoleonic settlement.
