Battle of Casaglia

Overview

The Battle of Casaglia was a part of the Neapolitan War. An Austrian force under the command of Johann Friedrich von Mohr engaged a Neapolitan force under their commander, Joachim Murat. The battle took place around the village of Casaglia, seven miles northwest of Ferrara, and resulted in the Austrians recapturing the village from Murat.

Significance

The Battle of Casaglia was fought during the Neapolitan War of 1815, in which Austria moved to suppress Joachim Murat's bid to hold the Kingdom of Naples against the returning Bourbon order. At Casaglia, near Ferrara, an Austrian force of roughly 4,500 men under Johann Friedrich von Mohr engaged a larger Neapolitan force of approximately 7,000 under Murat's command. Despite the numerical disadvantage, the Austrians retook the village, inflicting around 1,000 casualties on the Neapolitan side. The engagement was part of a broader Austrian offensive that steadily rolled back Murat's forces in northern Italy, contributing to the collapse of his campaign and ultimately to his loss of the Neapolitan throne.
