The Battle of Saint Gotthard, fought on 1 August 1664, pitted a Holy Roman Empire force of 26,000–28,000 under Raimondo Montecuccoli against an Ottoman army of 50,000–60,000 commanded by Grand Vizier Köprülüzade Fazıl Ahmed Pasha. Imperial casualties of approximately 2,000 against Ottoman losses estimated between 8,000 and 10,000 indicate a significant tactical success for the outnumbered Habsburg and allied force within the Austro-Turkish War of 1663–1664. The engagement represented the principal field confrontation of that war, demonstrating that an organized European coalition force could defeat an Ottoman army of roughly double its size in open battle. Despite the outcome on the field, the subsequent Peace of Vasvár granted the Ottomans favorable terms, limiting the strategic translation of the military result and generating considerable controversy within the Holy Roman Empire over the war's conclusion.
