Battle of Rocheserviere

Overview

The Battle of Rocheserviere was fought at Rocheservière on the 20 June 1815, between Vendéan Royalists, who had remained loyal to King Louis XVIII during the Hundred Days, and Napoleon's Army of the West, commanded by General Jean Maximilien Lamarque. The battle ended with the defeat of the Royalist forces. Five days later the Treaty of Cholet was signed, ending the hostilities.

Significance

The Battle of Rocheserviere was fought between Vendéan Royalists loyal to King Louis XVIII and Napoleon's Army of the West under General Lamarque during the Hundred Days. The Royalist forces, numbering roughly 8,000, were defeated by a French Imperial army of approximately 6,000, with Royalist casualties estimated between 100 and 500. The battle's most consequential effect was its finality: five days after the engagement, the Treaty of Cholet was signed, ending hostilities in the Vendée. The defeat effectively suppressed the Royalist uprising in the region during Napoleon's brief return to power, removing a significant internal military threat to the Empire on its western flank at a moment when Napoleon faced the far larger coalition forces assembling to the north.
