Battle context
The Battle of Rich Mountain was fought in Randolph County, Virginia as part of the Operations in Western Virginia Campaign, an early phase of the American Civil War. The engagement pitted a Union force of approximately 2,000 men against a Confederate force of roughly 1,300 under John Pegram, with Confederate casualties recorded at around 300. As one of the early Federal operations in western Virginia, Rich Mountain contributed to the Union effort to secure the region, which held strategic value as a contested border area. The campaign of which it formed a part helped establish Union presence in territory where loyalties were divided and where control had direct implications for the broader struggle over Virginia's western counties.
