Battle of Refugio

Significance

The Battle of Refugio, fought March 12–15, 1836, near Refugio, Texas, was part of the Goliad Campaign of the Texas Revolution. A force of roughly 1,500 Mexican Centralista soldiers under General José Urrea engaged two separate Texan detachments — Amon B. King's 28 volunteers and Lieutenant Colonel William Ward's approximately 120 men — resulting in a Mexican victory. The engagement splintered Texan resistance in the region, weakening the cohesion of Texan forces during a critical phase of the revolution. With approximately 100 Texan casualties, the battle demonstrated the vulnerability of small, dispersed Texan units to concentrated Mexican forces and contributed to the broader collapse of the Goliad defensive effort.
