Battle of Ras al-Ayn

Battle context

The Battle of Ras al-Ayn illustrated the multi-sided character of the Syrian Civil War, where Kurdish, Syrian government, and opposition forces pursued competing objectives in the same urban space. In its first phase, Syrian Arab Army forces were expelled from the town by Syrian rebels, only for those rebels to then turn against the YPG-affiliated fighters who held parts of the city. This rapid realignment demonstrated that opposition to the Assad government did not produce a unified front; rebel and Kurdish forces treated each other as adversaries once the common Syrian Army presence was removed. Over the following months the city remained divided between rebel-held and YPG-held zones, with intermittent fighting gradually expanding YPG territorial control. The growing dominance of Islamist factions among the rebels deepened the conflict's ideological dimension, sharpening tensions with the secular-leftist YPG. The battle's final phase in July 2013 ended with a YPG-led alliance fully expelling rebel forces from Ras al-Ayn, consolidating Kurdish administrative control over the town and marking an early, concrete expansion of the Rojava autonomous zone in northern Syria.
