The Battle of Raate Road was fought in January 1940 as part of the broader Battle of Suomussalmi during the Winter War between Finland and the Soviet Union. Finnish forces under Hjalmar Siilasvuo, numbering approximately 6,000, engaged a Soviet force that ranged between roughly 14,000 and 25,000 troops under Alexei Vinogradov. Soviet casualties reached over 4,600, a figure that underscores the disproportionate cost borne by the larger force. As a component of the Suomussalmi engagement, the battle contributed to Finland's ability to resist Soviet advances in the northern theater, demonstrating that Finnish forces could defeat substantially larger Soviet formations during the Winter War.
