Significance

The Battle of Quiévrain constituted an early engagement of the War of the First Coalition, one of the opening armed confrontations between Habsburg forces and the French Kingdom following France's declaration of war. Occurring as a pair of skirmishes rather than a pitched battle, the engagement reflected the tentative and disorganized character of French offensive operations in the initial phase of the Revolutionary Wars. With 15,000 French troops under Biron and Dampierre facing Austrian forces under Beaulieu, the clash represented one of the first tests of the new French revolutionary army against a professional Habsburg opponent.
