The action of 22 October 1793 was a minor naval engagement in the Mediterranean during the War of the First Coalition. HMS Agamemnon, a 64-gun ship of the line under Horatio Nelson, engaged the French frigate Melpomène off Sardinia, inflicting significant damage before the arrival of the broader French squadron under Commodore Perrée forced the pursuit to break off. Although inconclusive in immediate naval terms, the engagement underscored the operational stakes in the western Mediterranean: the French squadron subsequently anchored in Corsican harbours to land reinforcements for the French garrison on the island, where the local population was in open revolt.
