Overview

The Battle of Pont-Charrault, also called the Battle of Gravereau Bridge or the Battle of La Guérinière, occurred on March 19, 1793, at the outset of the War in the Vendée. The Vendéen insurgents, led by Charles de Royrand, were pitted against a Republican column commanded by General Louis de Marcé.

Significance

The Battle of Pont-Charrault, fought at the outset of the War in the Vendée, was an early engagement between Vendéen insurgents under Charles de Royrand and a Republican column commanded by General Louis de Marcé. With Vendéen forces numbering roughly 5,000 against a Republican column of approximately 2,300, the engagement demonstrated the scale of armed resistance the Republic faced in the region almost immediately after the uprising began. Republican casualties of 200–500 against Vendéen losses of around 250 suggest the insurgents held an advantage, establishing early momentum for the royalist and Catholic resistance that would sustain the conflict through 1796. The battle's place at the very opening of the war gave it a formative character: it signaled that suppressing the Vendéen uprising would require sustained military commitment well beyond the initial Republican deployment.
