Battle of Pont-Barré

Overview

The Battle of Pont-Barré saw Royalist Vendeans under Pierre Duhoux and Dominique Piron de La Varenne fighting a Republican French column under Charles François Duhoux near Saint-Lambert-du-Lattay. Duhoux's Republican column advanced southwest from Angers and encountered Vendean defenders led by his nephew Pierre at the bridge over the Layon River. The rebels held their ground until reinforcements under Piron La Varenne arrived and gained the upper hand. The Vendeans put the Republicans to flight, killing 1,362 soldiers and capturing all their artillery. The action was part of a Republican strategy of invading the Vendée from several different directions. The rebels concentrated against and defeated the encroaching columns one by one at Coron, Tiffauges, Pont-Barré, Montaigu and Saint-Fulgent.

Significance

Pont-Barré was one of several engagements in a coordinated Republican strategy to invade the Vendée from multiple directions simultaneously in September 1793. A Republican column under Charles Duhoux advanced southwest from Angers but was checked at the bridge over the Layon River by Vendean defenders under Pierre Duhoux — his own nephew — and subsequently routed when Piron La Varenne's reinforcements arrived. The Republicans lost 1,362 killed and all their artillery. The defeat at Pont-Barré was not an isolated reverse: the Vendeans countered the multi-column offensive by concentrating their forces against each Republican thrust in turn, defeating separate columns at Coron, Tiffauges, Pont-Barré, Montaigu, and Saint-Fulgent in sequence. This pattern of defeating the Republican invasion piecemeal demonstrated the Vendean capacity to use interior lines effectively against a dispersed offensive, and the loss of an entire column's artillery represented a material setback for Republican forces in the region.
