Battle of Pisagua

Overview

The Battle of Pisagua, was a landing operation of the War of the Pacific, fought on November 2, 1879, between Chile and the combined forces of Bolivia and Peru. The Chilean army commanded by Erasmo Escala, supported by the Chilean Fleet, launched an amphibious assault on the port of Pisagua and successfully drove the defending Bolivian-Peruvian forces, led by Gen. Juan Buendia, back from the shore. They established a beachhead that allowed an initial force of about 1,000 Chilean soldiers in two assault waves to disembark onto Peruvian territory at Pisagua in Tarapacá Department. This region was the principal territory in dispute.

Significance

The Battle of Pisagua was the opening amphibious operation of the Chilean land campaign in the War of the Pacific. By driving Bolivian-Peruvian defenders under Gen. Juan Buendia back from the shore, Chilean forces under Erasmo Escala, supported by the Chilean Fleet, secured a beachhead that allowed an initial force of approximately 1,000 soldiers to disembark in two assault waves onto Peruvian territory. The landing placed Chilean troops inside the Tarapacá Department, described as the principal territory in dispute in the war. Control of this port gave Chile a foothold from which to project force inland, making Pisagua a strategically consequential entry point into the contested nitrate-producing region that lay at the center of the broader conflict.
