The battle was the culminating point of a naval campaign that lasted about five months in which the Chilean Navy had the sole mission of eliminating its Peruvian counterpart. Significance

The Battle of Angamos concluded a five-month Chilean naval campaign whose singular objective was the destruction of Peruvian naval power. The capture of the ironclad monitor Huáscar, commanded by Rear Admiral Miguel Grau Seminario, removed the most capable Peruvian warship from the conflict and ended Peru's ability to contest control of the Pacific. With Chilean naval supremacy established, Chile gained freedom to move troops and supplies along the coast at will, a prerequisite for the land campaigns that would follow deeper into Peruvian and Bolivian territory. Angamos thus marked the transition of the War of the Pacific from a contest for sea control to a largely one-sided ground offensive.

Tactics

Two Chilean armored frigates, under Commodore Galvarino Riveros Cárdenas and Navy Captain Juan José Latorre, engaged and battered the Peruvian monitor Huáscar before capturing her. The overview does not detail the specific maneuvers, formations, or positioning used during the engagement beyond this.
