Battle context
The Battle of Perpignan on 17 July 1793 saw the French Army of the Eastern Pyrenees under Louis-Charles de Flers successfully defend against an offensive launched by Antonio Ricardos and the Spanish Army of Catalonia, inflicting roughly 1,000 Spanish casualties and compelling the attackers to pull back. Perpignan, then the chief city of Roussillon province and a strategically significant position in the Eastern Pyrenees theater, was retained by France. The action was part of the War of the Pyrenees, itself a theater of the broader War of the First Coalition, in which Spain had joined the coalition powers seeking to contain revolutionary France. By turning back the Spanish offensive, the French Army of the Eastern Pyrenees denied Ricardos a foothold that could have threatened the Roussillon region and maintained French control of a key provincial center along the Pyrenean frontier.
