Oriamendi was an overwhelming Carlist victory during the First Carlist War, the first of three dynastic conflicts fought in Spain over royal succession and the character of the Spanish monarchy. With Liberal forces numbering approximately 9,300 and sustaining between 1,000 and 1,500 casualties, the battle demonstrated the Carlists' capacity to inflict significant losses on the Liberal military establishment. The engagement involved a Liberal command that included both Spanish generals and the British officer De Lacy Evans, reflecting the international dimension of Liberal support in the conflict. As a decisive Carlist success, Oriamendi reinforced Carlist military standing during the broader struggle that would continue until 1840.
