Significance
The Battle of Noreia in 113 BC opened the Cimbrian War, marking the first major military encounter between the Roman Republic and the migrating Cimbri and Teutons. The engagement ended in Roman defeat, with recorded casualties of 24,000 from a force of around 30,000, constituting a near-total destruction of the Roman force under Gnaeus Papirius Carbo. As the opening battle of a war that would run until 100 BC, the result established the Cimbri and Teutons as a serious military threat capable of inflicting catastrophic losses on Roman armies in open battle. The scale of the Roman collapse at Noreia set the initial conditions of the war, signaling that the migrating tribes — whose combined reported strength of 300,000 vastly outnumbered the Roman force — could not be checked without substantially greater Roman commitment.
