Battle of Aquae Sextiae

Significance

The Battle of Aquae Sextiae was a decisive Roman victory in the Cimbrian War, halting the Teutonic and Ambrone advance through the Alps into Italy. It followed a sequence of serious Roman defeats — at Noreia, Burdigala, and most catastrophically at Arausio — that had left the Roman Republic exposed to sustained Germanic incursion. Under Gaius Marius, Roman forces numbering between 32,000 and 40,000 inflicted casualties reported at 100,000 to 120,000 on the Teutons, effectively destroying them as a fighting force. By blocking the Alpine passage, the battle removed one of the two major Germanic threats converging on Italy during this period, allowing Marius to subsequently redirect Roman strength against the Cimbri. The victory marked a turning point after years of Roman military failure and established Marius as the preeminent Roman commander of the conflict.
