Battle of Ningpo

Significance

The Battle of Ningpo represented a failed Qing attempt to reverse British territorial gains made after the fall of Chinhai during the First Opium War. A Chinese force under Prince Yijing, numbering around 3,000 troops, was dispatched to retake the British-occupied city of Ningbo but was repulsed with casualties estimated between 500 and 600 men. The defeat demonstrated the Qing military's inability to dislodge British forces from seized coastal positions even when mounting a deliberate counteroffensive. Despite this defensive success, the British subsequently withdrew from Ningbo the following spring, meaning the battle preserved occupation that was ultimately abandoned rather than consolidated—reflecting the broader campaign dynamic in which British operations along the Chinese coast were driven by strategic pressure rather than permanent territorial ambition.
