Significance

Neresheim was fought as Archduke Charles, under pressure from Moreau's Army of Rhin-et-Moselle, turned to strike the pursuing French rather than continue his withdrawal. Despite some success on the Austrian left wing, the engagement resolved into a stalemate, and Charles subsequently continued his retreat deeper into the Electorate of Bavaria. The battle did not arrest the French operational momentum in southern Germany; Moreau's army maintained pressure on Habsburg forces throughout the campaign.
