Battle of Nantes

Overview

The Battle of Nantes was fought on 29 June 1793 during the War in the Vendée. In this engagement, French Republican forces successfully defended Nantes from a royalist attack led by Jacques Cathelineau, who was mortally wounded in the fighting. General Louis Marie Turreau wrote of it:The siege of Nantes is perhaps the most important military event of our revolution. Perhaps the destinies of the Republic [herself] were tied to the resistance of this city.

Significance

The Battle of Nantes was a defensive engagement in which Republican forces, numbering roughly 12,000, repelled a Royalist attack by a force approximately 30,000 strong. The Royalist commander Jacques Cathelineau was mortally wounded during the fighting, removing the most prominent leader the Vendéan insurgency had yet produced. General Turreau, writing after the fact, judged the defense of Nantes the most important military event of the Revolution, arguing that the Republic's survival was bound to the city's resistance. That assessment reflects the strategic weight of the engagement: had Nantes fallen, the Vendéan forces would have secured a major Atlantic port, altered the material balance of the insurrection, and posed a far graver threat to Republican control of the west. The Royalist repulse, combined with the loss of Cathelineau and reported casualties of around 1,500, checked the momentum of the Vendéan uprising at a moment when it had already overrun much of the surrounding region.
