Battle of Nagysalló

Significance

The Battle of Nagysalló on 19 April 1849 was the second engagement of the second phase of the Hungarian Spring Campaign of 1849. The campaign carried a dual strategic objective: relieving the Habsburg siege of the fortress of Komárom and encircling the imperial forces headquartered in Buda and Pest. The Hungarian Revolutionary Army, numbering roughly 23,784, routed the imperial corps of Lieutenant General Ludwig von Wohlgemuth, an Austrian force drawn from the Habsburg Hereditary Lands and deployed to reinforce the suppression of the revolution. Austrian casualties reached 1,538, substantially heavier than any Hungarian losses recorded. The defeat of Wohlgemuth's corps removed a blocking force that had been positioned to contest Hungarian operational freedom in the region, contributing to the momentum the Hungarian command needed to press toward Komárom and threaten the imperial hold on the twin capitals.
