Battle of Hegyes

Overview

The Battle of Kishegyes was a military engagement during the Hungarian Revolution of 1848. Fought from 11–15 July 1849, the battle pitted the Hungarian Revolutionary Army, commanded by Generals Antal Vetter and Richard Guyon, against the Imperial Habsburg Corps led by Lieutenant Field Marshal Josip Jelačić, Ban of Croatia, whose forces included allied Croatian and Serbian units.

Significance

The Battle of Hegyes was fought between Hungarian Revolutionary forces under Generals Antal Vetter and Richard Guyon and the Imperial Habsburg Corps commanded by Lieutenant Field Marshal Josip Jelačić, Ban of Croatia, during the final stages of the Hungarian Revolution of 1848. The Hungarian force of approximately 8,360 faced a substantially larger Habsburg force of nearly 18,000, which included Croatian and Serbian allied units under Jelačić.
