Battle context

The Battle of Hegyes was fought between Hungarian Revolutionary forces under Generals Antal Vetter and Richard Guyon and the Imperial Habsburg Corps commanded by Lieutenant Field Marshal Josip Jelačić, Ban of Croatia, during the final stages of the Hungarian Revolution of 1848. The Hungarian force of approximately 8,360 faced a substantially larger Habsburg force of nearly 18,000, which included Croatian and Serbian allied units under Jelačić. The engagement occurred in July 1849, a period when Hungarian revolutionary resistance was coming under increasing pressure from both Austrian imperial and Russian intervention forces. The marked disparity in force sizes between the two sides reflected the broader strategic situation facing the Hungarian Revolutionary Army in the campaign's closing phase.
