Overview

The battle of Mykolaiv started on the night of 26 February 2022, as part of the southern Ukraine campaign during the Russian invasion of Ukraine. It ended with Russian forces being repulsed from the city in March, and by April all but a few of its surrounding villages were back under Ukrainian control.

Significance

The Battle of Mykolaiv began on the night of 26 February 2022 as part of the broader southern Ukraine campaign during the Russian invasion. Russian forces, estimated at 20,000–25,000 troops, were repulsed from the city in March 2022, and by April Ukrainian forces had recovered control of all but a few surrounding villages. The successful defense, conducted under commanders Dmytro Marchenko and Vitaliy Kim, denied Russian forces a key urban objective in southern Ukraine and halted their advance in the region, inflicting an estimated 300 casualties on the attacking force. Holding Mykolaiv preserved Ukrainian positions in the south and limited Russian territorial gains along that axis of the invasion.
