Overview

The Battle of (the) Muottental was fought in 1799, on 30 September and 1 October, during the Second Coalition war as part of Suvorov's Swiss campaign. The Russian troops of Rosenberg's rearguard, ordered by Suvorov, stood in the choke point of Muottental, now Muotatal, covering the march of the main force, and were attacked by outnumbered French troops under the overall command of Masséna. French troops were more than double that of the Russian forces, according to some statements. It ended in a decisive Russian victory.

Significance

The Battle of Muottental formed part of Suvorov's Swiss campaign during the War of the Second Coalition, in which Russian forces were attempting to maneuver through the Alpine passes. Rosenberg's rearguard action at Muottental covered the withdrawal of Suvorov's main force, allowing it to continue its march despite French pressure. Although the French under Masséna held a significant numerical advantage — outnumbering the Russian force by more than two to one — the engagement ended in a decisive Russian victory, with French casualties running considerably higher than Russian losses. The outcome demonstrated that rearguard operations in constricted mountain terrain could offset numerical disadvantage, and the successful covering action preserved the cohesion of Suvorov's force during a demanding Alpine withdrawal.

Rosenberg's rearguard occupied the choke point of Muottental, using the confined valley terrain to neutralize the French numerical superiority. By holding this bottleneck, the Russians prevented Masséna's larger force from exploiting its advantage in numbers, protecting the march of Suvorov's main body while absorbing and repelling the French attack.
